Feedback from those who use Seafish’s services

"Seafish, with its relatively small budget has been doing a great job balancing the sustainability debate.  As an independent authority, it is ideally place to give unbiased comment on the environmental issues that are at the centre of the changes taking place in our industry. Concerning the growing awareness of the health benefits of eating seafood, Seafish has done well translating some very complicated medical science into a language that can be understood by retailers, consumers, school teachers and even me."

"Seafish has provided the industry with invaluable work especially on legislation. The team responsible for running the Food Legislation Expert Group are worthy of special mention - without their diligence the seafood industry would have been burdened with ill-conceived legislation particularly from Europe.

Likewise the economics team which provides the industry with much needed, professional analysis. I cite the work on the Icelandic/Humber supply chain. The data highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of Icelandic imports which was recently used in a successful trade mission to Iceland."

"The owners of the Saucy Fish Co are founder members of the Common Language Group, which was established by Seafish to bring industry together with the environmental groups, government, and scientists.  We meet 3 times a year to have honest open discussions on how to tackle the issues with fisheries, such as discarding and the impacts from fishing gear. The CLG is brilliant as we can get the facts on the table and have powerful debates about how to bring about real change in the seas.  This group inspires action and many of the practical projects that have been started by industry and government have been spawned out of debates within the CLG, such as the Discard Action Group, the Fishing for the Markets project, and the MSC assessments of the inshore fisheries.  Good relationships between these organisations are vitally important to gain each other's confidence that we are working to achieve the same goal - long term sustainable fisheries. From the first meeting when there were 4 of us round the table it has grown to fill huge rooms with 50+ people, a huge success for Seafish."

"Our new Aquahive technology represents a major leap forward in the efforts to build up a long term and sustainable fishery for Lobster in Orkney. Seafish has aided this development significantly by supporting our research through the Industry Project Fund and continues to provide a strong link with UK Fishery organisations who want to develop sustainable lobster fisheries."

"Your involvement in Northern Ireland as a representative for Seafish and DARD provides ground level contact to the industry and is an invaluable service which has never been provided before. The knowledge you have and the meetings you facilitate - coupled with the help you have provided to all in the industry - is an invaluable resource for the whole seafood industry."

"From the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year to developing and testing new gear to improve selectivity and the industry/NGO Common Language Group, Seafish provides a vital role in the UK fishing industry. By promoting sustainably-caught, UK seafood, Seafish raises the issues of sustainability with a solutions-oriented and industry-focused perspective.  As a stakeholder-based NGO, the MSC works with the UK fishing industry to transform the market to a sustainable basis. Seafish acts as the voice of the industry, bringing together industry and NGOs to work together."
