UKFEN - UK Fisheries Economics Network

UKFEN is a network for economists and analysts working in connection with the fishing and seafood industries. The network was founded by Seafish in early 2011.

The aims of the network are to:

  • promote professional exchange among fisheries economists and analysts, working throughout the seafood value chain
  • link data originators, researchers and analysts, in academia, local or central government, or in industry
  • share research plans among members to make best use of skills, data, tools and resource
  • share members' present and planned research - proposals, progress, issues and findings
  • discuss and prioritise current and future research needs
  • instigate / coordinate research proposals and funding applications where appropriate
  • debate and resolve technical issues such as analytical approaches, data sets, methods and standards
  • facilitate communication between analysts and their customers, clients, users of their outputs

How UKFEN operates

  • Seafish provides the chair for general meetings and network secretariat.
  • Members are drawn from consulting, academia, government, marine laboratories and research institutes
  • There is no fee for membership and no obligation to participate in meetings.
  • UKFEN holds two general meetings per year using Video Conference between Marine Scotland, Victoria Quay, Edinburgh and Defra, London with the option to join using a conference call facility so that members can dial in from their own desk if they are unable to travel to meetings
  • Topic-specific meetings and workshops are held as required
  • Members are encouraged to exchange views and information and collaborate as appropriate throughout the year, benefitting from introductions and shared interests that come to light during general meetings
  • If you would like Seafish to circulate an invitation to tender for a consulting project to all of the commercial members of UKFEN, please contact Hazel Curtis.  Requests will be forwarded to all commercial members upon receipt by Seafish.  Otherwise you are free to contact members directly via their contact details on our members' page.
  • Any economist or analyst who is interested in joining the network is invited to contact Hazel Curtis at Seafish

Click here for details of UKFEN members.  Anyone wanting to secure the services of a fisheries economist or analyst or discuss potential research can contact members directly, or can ask Seafish to circulate an email to all or any UKFEN members who might be able to help

Any seafood industry groups, companies or individuals who might want to submit items or ideas for discussion at UKFEN meetings or among UKFEN members between meetings, is very welcome to contact Hazel Curtis at Seafish, who can facilitate this or any other interactions with network members.
