US: Food industry concerned about dioxin proposal
19 January 2012
The food industry in the US is worried a new Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA)proposal on dioxins goes too far
and could deem the average US diet dangerous. The
Food Industry Dioxin Working Group is also worried about the way in
which the EPA has split the risk assessment into cancer and
non-cancer risk, and set a reference dose for the
non-cancer risk.
The EPA is expected to release a final guidance on dioxin exposure
shortly. The level of dioxin exposure considered safe by EPA is
expected to be 0.7 pg/kg body weight per day. The limits set
by WHO and the EU are between 1 and 4 pg/kg per
kilogram body weight per day.
