The Japanese food sanitation council has approved stricter limits on radioactive caesium in food. The limits had been proposed by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry of Japan. The proposed maximum permitted limits are 100 becquerels per kilogram (Bq/kg) for most food items including fish. The current limit in Japan, which the European Commission has also adopted for imports from Japan, is 500 Bq/kg.
