Fiji back on approved list

28 February 2011

The Commission Decision allowing the importation of fishery products from Fiji was published in the Official Journal of 26 February. It is Commission Decision 2011/131/EU and is available here: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2011:053:0073:0073:EN:PDF.

The Commission website has yet to be updated with the Fijian establishments that are authorised to produce or export the fish. The Fijian establishment list will appear here under Section VIII: Fishery Products, Fiji: https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/sanco/traces/output/listsPerActivity_en.htm#

Below is an update from the Food Standards Agency, 2 March 2011:

INCLUSION OF FIJI ON THE LIST OF EU-APPROVED COUNTRIES FOR FISHERY PRODUCTS

Further to my letter of 10 February 2011 (ref:FIN 001/2011), I am writing to advise that the Commission published Decision 2011/131/EU on Saturday 26 February 2011, amending Annex II to Decision 2006/766/EC (as amended) by inserting Fiji in the list of third countries from which imports of fishery products for human consumption are permitted. A link to the Decision follows:

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2011:053:0073:0073:EN:PDF

Background

Annex II of Decision 2006/766/EC did not previously list Fiji as an EU approved country for the export of fishery products to the EU.

The Commission has now evaluated the controls in place in Fiji, which govern the production of fishery products for human consumption destined for export to the EU and has also received appropriate guarantees from the Fijian  Authorities that conditions applicable in Fiji are equivalent to those in the EU.

Decision 2011/131/EU inserts Fiji in Annex II to Decision 2006/766/EC with immediate effect.

I hope that this is helpful but if you need any further information please let me know. The Agency's imports section on our website can be found at http://www.food.gov.uk/imports

Importers may also register for the Agency's on-line Guidance and Regulatory Advice on Import Legislation system (GRAIL) by following this link: https://grail.foodapps.co.uk/grail/general/home.aspx

Yours sincerely
