Import and export
Around 70-80% of the seafood consumed in the UK comes from overseas. The value of UK seafood exported to Europe and beyond amounts to about £1.5 billion every year.
While seafood which is traded between EU countries is largely unrestricted, imports and exports between EU countries and other nations are strictly regulated.
In the case of imports, this is to ensure that the imported food conforms to EU standards of food quality and safety to ensure a high level of protection of public health and animal health. Seafood for export must generally comply with the regular EU-wide requirements; in addition, the importing country may place supplementary requirements in terms of standards and health certification.
