A reputable standard will be designed using one or more internationally-accepted codes or protocols. These help to define and measure the credibility of a particular standard and the way it operates.
There are currently four international protocols which are particularly prevalent for certification schemes and which are applied to many of the standards reviewed in this Guide.
Each of these Guidelines are explained in a little more detail below:
- The FAO Guidelines for Aquaculture Certification
- The FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries
- The FAO Guidelines for Ecolabelling of fish and fishery products
- The Global Food Safety Initiative
