Funding for fishermen

Seafish offers funding to fishermen who want to undertake voluntary training to develop their safety skills. Currently, there are numerous forms of funding support available for fishermen's safety training, including:

New Entrant Training

To encourage new recruits into the fishing industry, we are offering the three-week Introduction to Commercial Fishing course free of charge* throughout the UK. The course will train new entrants, to a higher level than the minimum legal requirements.

Refresher Safety Training

This can be undertaken by experienced fishermen who completed their mandatory safety training more than three years ago. The courses cover sea survival, fire-fighting, first aid and safety awareness, and fishermen can now attend free of  charge

Under 16.5m Skipper's Certificate

Seafish funding is available for Bridge watch keeping, Engine room watch keeping, Intermediate Stability Awareness and GMDSS Short Range Certificates. Additional funding is also available for fishermen who already hold the Seafish Under 16.5m skipper's certificate to undertake advanced engineering and radar courses.

Certificates of Competency

Seafish offer grant support for experienced fishermen undertaking MCA (Fishing Vessel) Deck and Engineer Officer Certificates of Competency.

Other short courses

In addition to the above, there are a host of other short courses that funding is available for. If you are an experienced commercial fisherman, now is the time to take advantage of this funding to develop your skills and knowledge for the future.

If there is a course you would like to undertake, get in touch and we will try to help. For example, have you considered gaining a higher level GMDSS radio operator certificate? Thought about taking an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), Approved Engineering Course (AEC) or Human Element Leadership and Management (HELM) course? These courses can open up other income earning opportunities for you and help you develop your career as a professional seafarer.

We are currently able to fund the delivery of courses in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales until at least 31 March 2018. Call Seafish Training on 01472 252302 or email for further information.

*Funding has been received from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and the Maritime & Coastguard Agency(MCA).
