EU aquaculture production was 1.28 million tonnes in 2014, with an almost equal split between finfish and shellfish production. EU aquaculture accounts for nearly 20% of fish production and directly employs some 85,000 people. The UK aquaculture sector is worth some £800 million.
Europe is the largest seafood market and importer in the world. Europe accounts for some 20 - 25% of the global seafood market. The EU relies on imports for almost 70% of the seafood it consumes. This includes farmed salmon from Norway, warm water prawns and FW fish (e.g. pangasius and tilapia) from SE Asia and S America.
Key Seafish work areas are:
- Aquaculture waste and the disposal of animal by-products
- Supporting the fishmeal and fish-oil sector
- Ensuring safer seafood reaches the market, particularly in relation to live bivalve consumption
- Provision of industry guides and news alerts.
