Packaging and Packaging Waste
Seafish has written a guide on the legal requirements that businesses should consider when designing packaging for products to be placed on the market within the EU. The guide also explains the legal obligations that larger businesses may have in contributing to the packaging waste recovery targets of the UK.
Seafish's Guidance on
Packaging and Packaging Waste (March 2009)
gives information on the Packaging and Packaging Waste
Directive and its implementing legislation, The Producer
Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2005 (as
amended) and The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations
2003 (as amended).
The Regulations apply to businesses that are involved in the
production of packaging, use packaging or sell packaged goods. You
will need to comply with these regulations if, each year, you
handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging or have a turnover of more
than £2 million.
The Regulations require those businesses to recycle a percentage of
packaging and also to design packaging to minimise the materials
used and maximise recycling.
