General Food Labelling Requirements

The Food Labelling Regulations 1996 (as amended) are the main set of rules covering the labelling of foods in general. They have provisions requiring food to be labelled with a name, a list of ingredients, a use by or best before date, storage conditions and the name and address of the manufacturer or packer. There are several other general rules covering, to name a few, nutritional labelling, country of origin and health claims. And any food label is covered by other laws including the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 and the Weights and Measures Act 1985.

For labelling as it applies to seafood, see Seafish's  Seafood Labelling Guidance (January 2011)
