What we do
We provide a range of services for fishermen covering vessel safety and accreditation through to advice on fishing gear and economic performance.
Research & Development
We have a wide range of expertise in fisheries and gear technology. We carry out several fisheries related projects each year and provide advice to fishermen on all aspects of fishing gear technology, through project reports, data/fact sheets and personal responses to individuals requests where possible. We also work closely with other fisheries research institutes in UK & Europe, maintaining up to date knowledge on fishing gear.
To help ensure fishing continues in marine nature protected areas, the R&D team offers advice on environmental assessments including simple measures to reduce the potential impact of fishing.
Training
We develop learning materials, training courses and qualifications for fishermen, support and oversee their delivery and ensures that training opportunities are available throughout the UK.
Kingfisher
Kingfisher Information Services has been supplying fishermen with seabed information for over 40 years. Kingfisher now provides a host of products and services that improve safety and awareness of surface and subsea hazards. We provide fishermen with highly accurate locations of offshore structures. Provided free of charge, this frequently updated information ensures fishermen are kept up-to-date with the latest offshore activity, as well as installations and infrastructure developments.
Marine Services
We uphold and improve the level of safety at sea within the fishing industry. Our marine survey team offers a comprehensive range of services, not just to the fishing sector, but to boat builders and prospective boat owners in general. Services include the survey and certification of fishing boats and workboats up to 24m registered length, consultancy, LSA inspections, condition surveys, re-measurement and tonnage calculation.
Economics
We are the main source of economic information for industry and policy makers on the fishing, supply and processing industries. We conduct surveys and analyses of the UK fleet and processing sectors including trends in costs and earnings and economic impact multipliers. We also produce strategic analyses such as the 'Seafood Strategic Outlook' and fleet futures modelling.
