What we do in training
Training is vital in ensuring that fishermen have the skills and knowledge to work safely and efficiently.
We are a founder member of the Maritime Skills Alliance, through which we strive to ensure that fishermen have access to appropriate training programmes and qualifications, based on up-to-date National Occupational Standards, that are transferable across different maritime industries.
The Sea Fishing Apprenticeship programme helps recruit and train new entrants into the industry. We hope that our new 3-week Introduction to Commercial Fishing course will further boost the number of new entrants coming into the industry and progressing onto the Apprenticeship.
We have a range of short courses for fishermen ranging from basic safety to bridge watchkeeping, available throughout the UK for delivery by our network of approved instructors and training providers. Some of these courses can be studied on-line at our e-Academy. Whenever possible we try to source funding to help subsidise the cost of training to fishermen.
We maintain a comprehensive database of all fishermen's training, and provide advice and guidance to fishermen on training and certification requirements.
