Voluntary training

Seafish has developed a number of additional voluntary short courses. These include 2- and 5-day navigation courses, 2- and 5-day engineering courses and a 1-day stability awareness course.

Together with the GMDSS Short Range (Radio Operator) Certificate, these courses make up the proposed requirements for skippers of vessels less than 16.5m, which MCA intends to make mandatory.

For those wanting to start a career in fishing, the Seafish Introduction to Commercial Fishing course and the Maritime Skills Alliance's Sea Fishing Apprenticeship programme provide a solid foundation for training new entrants to become competent deckhands and potentially progress to higer levels.

Other voluntary short courses available include damage control, care of the catch, food safety, HACCP, net mending and basic seamanship.

Contact your local Seafish-approved training provider for further details and information on course availability or call our training team on 01472 252302.
