Risk Assessment

The object of risk assessment is to consider the risks to health and safety, and to take action to prevent or reduce the risk. Proper completion of a written assessment will show that health and safety has been considered and every reasonable effort has been made to make sure the vessel is safe for those aboard.

The Fishing Vessel Safety Folder
The Fishing Vessel Safety Folder was created by Seafish in response to concerns in the industry about risk assessments.

The folder has example risk assessment forms for different types of fishing operations, giving useful guidance to help fishermen carry out full risk assessments.

Guidance is also given in the folder for other safety documents, including the vessel safety policy, crew list and statement, and safety equipment checklist.

The Small Vessel Safety Guidance Booklet
Endorsed by the MCA, the Small Vessel Safety Guidance Booklet was created because of concerns in the industry about safety aboard small vessels measuring under 15m length overall.

The booklet gives simple guidance to help an owner/operator of a fishing vessel carry out a safety assessment. It contains questions which should be thought about in order to assess the fishing operation.

A risk assessment sheet has also been developed for use on small fishing vessels under 15m length overall. The blank risk assessment sheet includes a simple step-by-step guide to help an owner/operator carry out a risk assessment.
