Seafood Certification Network
The Seafood Certification Network (SCN) analyses and discusses certification topics relating to, and impacting, upon the seafood industry.
Over the past decade many new standards and certification schemes have been created, for example, the Seafish Responsible Fishing Scheme. To gain creditability, certification schemes need to contribute to raising industry standards, help manage risk, be of value, create better market access and provide assurance of a safe, responsible supply chain.
The Network comprises of individuals from standards setting organisations (for example, the Marine Stewardship Council), certification bodies (for example, Global Trust Certification) and other interested parties that make use of or otherwise have an interest in standards and certification schemes. The objective of the Network is to identify and promote the benefits of certification schemes within the seafood industry and to discuss areas of commonality and share best practice ideas. The Terms of Reference can be viewed here.
A new report by the University of Victoria (supported by the Pew Environment Group), ranks eco-labels intended to distinguish seafood produced with less damage to the environment. A Seafish summary of the 'How Green is your Eco-label?' report can be viewed here.
The date for the next conference call is to be confirmed.
