Seafish comments on Biodiversity 2020 indicators
24 November 2011
Seafish's Marine Environmental Legislation Expert Group (MELEG) has commented on the Biodiversity 2020 technical document Biodiversity 2020: Developing indicators for measuring success. MELEG commented on:
- the use of the proportion of large size classes of fish in surveys from the North Sea as a measure of capacity to sustain long-term fisheries;
- integration of biodiversity into key production sectors;
- the notion that the UK should bring in protection for a far larger proportion of its marine waters than the 10% suggested by the Convention on Biodiversity 2010; and
- pollution-reducing initiatives.
