New technologies to tackle fish fraud

The current system of controlling illegal activities in the in the seafood supply chain is mainly based on certificates accompanying goods and labelling of products. Both these measures are vulnerable to falsification. A new report published by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre examines new molecular techniques based on forensic genetics, genomics and chemistry, and discusses how these can be used for traceability and in support of fishery control and enforcement.
