Marteilia refringens detected in the UK

05 September 2011

Diagnostic tests have confirmed the presence of Marteilia refringens in four individuals from a sample of 150 mussels taken from the Tamar Estuary in Cornwall. The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is now urging for no mussels to be moved to or from contaminated areas unless Fish Health Inspectorate permission is granted.

This is the first record of Marteilia refringens in the UK. The disease is listed in legislation as non-exotic to the European Union.
