Fylde Council wants fewer cockling permits
19 January 2012
Fylde Council wants to see the number of cockling permits be reduced and daily catch quotas introduced when the Ribble estuary's cockle beds reopen. The North West Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority (IFCA) closed the beds in November after excessive numbers of cocklers caused nuisance to Lytham residents and stretched the public agencies that policed their activities.
IFCA will reopen the beds once cockle stocks have recovered and safety issues have been addressed. In preparation, IFCA is working to revise cockling permits.
