EU ratifies establishment of RFMO
10 October 2011
The European Union has ratified the setting up of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO), a new Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (RFMO) that will govern fishing activities in the high seas of the South Pacific.
The South Pacific is one of the few remaining areas that have not yet been regulated by an RFMO for non-tuna species. When the agreement comes into force, the SPRFMO will manage non-highly migratory fish species in the region, including both pelagic and deep sea stocks such as jack mackerel and orange roughy.
