CFP: Commissioner wants decentralised decision making
21 March 2011
The European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki, expressed her intention to decentralise technical decision making, while retaining policy making within the Commission. Ms Damanaki was speaking at a meeting on the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) at the EC Representation in Berlin on 17 March. She stated: "What the EU should do is lay down the main objectives, fix the overall standards and prescribe the general principles. It would then be up to Member States to choose the mix of measures that best achieves those EU objectives in each region or sea basin."
