Static gear

The gear is set to allow fish to swim into it, or they are attracted to it by bait and consequently become caught by the gear.

All fishing gear has been developed to target specific species of fish and shellfish in particular areas depending on the depth of water, the type of seabed and tidal conditions that prevail there.

There are many different types of static gear. This section covers gill nets, drift nets, trammel nets, longlines, traps and jigging.
