Fishing gear
Seafish undertake many different areas of gear research within the catching sector enabling them to provide the industry with up to date advice on gear development, design, performance and efficiency.
The majority of this work involves discard reduction and assessing the impact of the gears on the environment. We regularly work on projects in conjunction with the fisheries research groups throughout the UK (CEFAS, Marine Scotland, FRS, DARD etc). Much of the work is part funded through the Seafish IPF, the EFF or by industry itself.

HirtshalsThe Sintef Flume Tank at Hirtshals, Denmark is used by Seafish for practical trawl gear technology training. Towed gearThe gear is towed through the water, either on or off the seabed, to overrun the target species or herd them into the net.
Encircling gearThe gear is set in a circular form to enclose a shoal of fish or a large area of water/seabed.Static gearThe gear is set to allow fish to swim into it, or they are attracted to it by bait and consequently become caught.
