Responsible Sourcing Information

There has been increasing attention in recent years on sustainability of fish stocks and fisheries. This new service from Seafish is designed to provide fish buyers and interested consumers with objective, scientifically-based information on stock status and management, gear technology and fisheries conservation measures.

The Responsible Sourcing Guides (Species Information) provide information on stocks worldwide, while the section on catching methods describes types of fishing gear and their operations. The section on mitigating measures describes ways in which the selectivity of fishing gear can be improved. In the contributors section there are links to the organisations which are responsible for fisheries science and management worldwide.

Finally there is information on the Responsible Fishing Scheme which is aimed at ensuring best quality and environmental practice on board vessels.

This document, by Gadus Associates, analyses the actual findings of the "2048 report", which gathered massive global media coverage in November 2006. Originally appearing as an article in Science, the coverage stemmed from a sensationalist claim that all fisheries would be depleted by 2048 if current trends continued. This document outlines the scientific counter argument to that claim, and details why the methods used to research and write the report are not applicable to modern fisheries management.
