Legislation

Legislation

Legislation impacts upon seafood and the marine environment on many levels, through laws, rules, codes of practice and guidance. It’s important that all seafood businesses understand the legislation that affects them, so that they can respond appropriately to developments and adhere to legislation when it is in place.

Dialogue
Seafish promotes and communicates the views, interests and concerns of the seafood industry to legislators and policymakers. It does this by:

  • providing seafood sector-relevant information and advice to Government;
  • providing official comment on existing legislation, legislation under discussion and policy; and
  • responding to relevant consultations.

Guidance
We prepare guidance on the interpretation of legislation following careful consultation with the relevant government authorities, usually the Food Standards Agency and DEFRA, and with Seafish's Food Legislation Expert Group (FLEG). You can access the guidance documents produced in this way on the Legislation guidance page of this site.

We also provide guidance on marine environmental issues - for details of this go to Marine Environment.

Consultations
Responses to consultations, whether public or restricted circulation, are made in conjunction with the FLEG. Active consultations and completed responses are available here.
