Legislation

Laws, rules and codes affect the way you run your business. Understanding the rules will help you comply with legislation and also help you respond appropriately to changes in regulation.

Legislation places obligations on operators in the seafood chain to ensure that the seafood under their control complies with food safety requirements. This includes information on the traceability of seafood products, for fisheries control, and labelling and packaging legislation for consumer information.

Seafish offers guidance on several aspects of seafood legislation, including hygiene, residues and labelling. This guidance has been produced through consultation with government authorities, including the Food Standards Agency and Defra, and the Food Legislation Expert Group (FLEG).

The FLEG is made up of representatives from all UK seafood sectors, from producers through to retailers. Seafish in conjunction with the FLEG monitors food legislation proposals, discusses them with industry and contributes to the development of food legislation. Our main remit is to interpret and clarify the detail of new and existing legislation for those working in the seafood industry, as well as ensuring the legislators and policy makers are kept fully informed about the industry's views and interests.
