Sustainability

Seafish is committed to the sustainable and efficient harvesting of those resources on which the UK seafood industry depends, the protection of marine ecosystems, and the development of marine aquaculture based on sustainable resource utilisation and best environmental practice.

Seafish will work to improve quality and to raise standards of seafood production, preparation and presentation throughout the industry.

Seafish Environmental Principles

Seafish projects and activities will be consistent with the above policy and will include:

  • helping to develop industry-wide environmental protection and conservation policies and encouraging their take up;
  • promoting the best interests of the seafood industry by providing accurate information and, whenever necessary, by challenging misinformation;
  • doing research, development and promotional activities to lessen the adverse environmental effects of the seafood industry;
  • working with the catching sector, scientists and other stakeholders to develop gears, operating protocols and management strategies that help conserve fish stocks and protect the marine environment; and
  • helping all sectors of the seafood industry to work towards using natural resources responsibly.

What Is Seafish Doing?

Seafish is helping the industry to become more sustainable through a variety of activities:

  • Bringing together fishermen and others from across all sectors of the seafood industry in the Seafish Domestic Catching & Processing Advisory Committee to consider and advise Seafish on the strategic priorities of the UK catching sector taking due account of the need for conservation and stability.
  • Bringing together all interested parties involved in importing seafood to the UK and subsequent processing in the Importing & Processing AC to consider and advise Seafish on sustainability issues relevant to the efficient sourcing of seafood from both wild catch and aquaculture supplied from outside the UK.
  • Seafish Gear technologists work with fishermen to develop and test gear designs which are more selective.

Fishing is the most dangerous peacetime occupation known to man – in Britain, it is approximately twenty-four times more dangerous than construction, which suffers the next highest numbers of deaths and injuries.
