Strategic direction
Our primary focus is to deliver value to the seafood industry for the levy which we collect from seafood sales. Our work on industry’s behalf is subject to rigorous monthly, quarterly and annual measurement to ensure that we deliver value wherever possible.
In 2009, our estimate of the total value delivered by Seafish services to industry was £22 million against a total investment of £8 million of levy monies, a return of just under 300 per cent against funds invested.
Seafish is currently re-balancing its work to reflect the changing nature of the seafood business. We have restructured our work into seven key themes. From April 2010, 50% of our investment on industry's behalf will be spent on addressing consumer concerns about seafood - such as sourcing and environmental impacts - and on communicating the health benefits of seafood to consumers by working with influential groups such as medical professionals, educators and dieticians.
However, we remain alert to the many dangers faced by fishermen at sea, and to providing training programmes to enable people across this industry to further their careers. We also aim to provide authoritative information to industry to help support their business decisions, as well as providing industry with help in interpreting and responding to legislation.
Finally, the need to protect our environment is at the forefront of the seafood industry's work, and a significant proportion of our levy investment is targeted at programmes that help industry to achieve this objective.
We have designed this website so that information is grouped around user's interests, however if you have any specific questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
