Seafish Gear Training Course for non-fishers to be held at Hirtshals Flume Tank

12 December 2017

This training course is aimed at fishery managers, legislators, researchers, NGO's and any groups or individuals that have an interest in the catching sector, and would like to extend their knowledge of the gear used by the UK industry and the selectivity of these gears. It will take a practical and hands on approach, using a wide range of model trawl gears demonstrated in the flume tank, supported by presentations, underwater video footage and discussion to provide the participants with an accurate picture of the trawl gear used by UK fishermen.

The course is being run by Seafish at the Sintef Flume Tank at the North Sea Centre in Hirtshals, Denmark from the 7th to the 8th of February 2018.  It is free to attend with lunch provided however course participants are responsible for arranging and funding their own travel and accommodation.

The course will run over one and a half days, from Wednesday 7th Feb 08.45 to lunch-time on Thursday 8th Feb. Participants attending from the UK will need to travel on Tuesday the 6th, with flights available to return home Thursday once the course has finished. Seafish will provide airport transfers for the most common flight arrival and departure times.

Further information on the course syllabus, travel arrangement and accomodation can be found below.

Please note demand is expected to be high and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.  Expressions of interest should be received no later than 8th January and your place will be confirmed no later than 12th January 2018.

Extra Info:

Airport and Flight -

The closest airport to Hirtshals is Aalborg (40 miles south). There are very few direct flights from the UK to Aalborg.  The favoured flights are with KLM via Amsterdam and from some areas SAS via Copenhagen.  KLM have regular flights from most UK regional airports to Amsterdam linking up with their flights from Amsterdam to Aalborg.

Seafish will provide a minibus for participants from Aalborg airport to Hirtshals to coincide with the common flight arrival times of approximately 17.00 - 17.30 and 21.30 -22.00 pm Tuesday 6th February. A bus service will also be provided to suit the popular return flight times on Thursday 8th February.

Accomodation -

There are several hotels in Hirtshals but only two close to the North Sea Centre. These are the Skaga Hotel http://www.skagahotel.dk/en/ and the Motel Nordsoen http://www.motelnordsoeen.dk/index.php/en/.

Both are adjacent to the flume tank and will give favourable rates to participants on the Seafish course if your attendance is mentioned at the time of booking.
