Kevin Todd from Cardiff has been crowned champion at the 65th British Fish Craft Championships, which took place on Sunday (27th) at Billingsgate Market, London.

The competition attracted a record number of entries from the UK's top fishmongers and saw contestants go head to head in a range of challenges from skinning flat fish to opening oysters.

This year's winner Kevin Todd from Ashtons Fishmongers in Cardiff, who also won the event in 2014, impressed the judges with his unrivalled speed and precision.

Along with earning the coveted title of British Fish Craft Champion, he also won the Shellfish and Collage categories, taking home the trophy, £370 and a trip to Norway to visit Sterling White Halibut.

A panel of experts from within the UK seafood industry judged the competition. The entrants were scored on their performance, presentation, hygiene and the general appearance of their finished product.

Competitors travelled from across the UK to compete, representing a range of big retailers and small independent fishmongers.

Kevin Todd said: "The competition was pretty tough this year, so I feel chuffed to be walking away with the award for a second time - I'm the first at Ashtons to have done the double.  My friends at work are certainly going to be very envious! I love my job and it's been so much fun taking part with the other competitors that share the same passion as me."

Seafish, the UK authority on seafood, was the headline sponsor of the event. CEO, Marcus Coleman, said: "It was an absolute privilege to witness the finest fish mongering skills in Britain first hand on Sunday. The pride and passion for their artistry was clear for all to see, and I was particularly struck by the way in which the competitors all support each other.

"Recognition should also be given to the event sponsors. It would be difficult to put on such a high-quality event without them, and having them there to present the prizes was really appreciated. The National Federation of Fishmongers should be congratulated for organising this marvellous showcase for their trade."

Gary Hooper from National Fishmonger's Federation, said: "Once again these championships have shown the level of skill and talent that goes into preparing the world class seafood we get to enjoy here in the UK. I'd like to congratulate Kevin and everyone who competed in this year's Championships; standards were incredibly high. It was a pleasure to welcome our industry's best to Billingsgate.
