Seafish Round Up July 2015

Posted by Janice Anderson, Business Services Director on 14 July 2015

For the past month I have been out and about a lot more, getting the chance to meet industry and our levy payers. I went up to the Skipper Expo in Aberdeen at the end of May, and as well as appreciating the efforts in setting up our stand and the variety of services on offer from Seafish, I was able to chat with Marine Scotland colleagues and industry reps from Norway. I have also been going round the country with our Corporate Plan roadshow, and so far have been involved in 3 of the events in Plymouth, Edinburgh and Peterhead. The variety of responses to the plan has been interesting, but I am pleased to say that overall they have been very positive and supportive.

I have been able to get out and about more thanks to the able team behind me that manage the various business services areas:  Declan Byrne (Financial Controller), Dafydd Sands (Information Systems Manager), Linsey Neill (HR Manager) and Tom Pithie (Levy Manager). Collectively they ensure that everything is running smoothly, enabling the organisation to deliver the new plan, and giving me the assurance that I can leave them to it!

I had a fantastic conversation with an independent economist last week on Value for Money (VFM). We didn't plan to discuss VFM, but the conversation drifted there and when I explained our VFM strategy and how we arrived at it, we both got very excited - sad I know! It turns out we are spot on with our approach, with the key points being: our panel process that recommends our workplans to the Board, our robust Project Management System that incorporates the VFM principles, our Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, and the evaluation of benefits. I never thought that VFM would stir up such emotion in me!
