Seafish on tour

Posted by Paul Williams, Chief Executive on 08 June 2015

Seafish is on tour, with a series of events around the UK to present the new Corporate Plan. We are covering most of the country, from Peterhead to Plymouth, where we hosted our first meeting on 3rd June. The aim of these events is to explain how the Plan was developed, based on solid industry input from our Panels, and to give levy payers and wider stakeholders the opportunity to question the Executive on how Seafish will meet the objectives described in the Plan.  It has been gratifying that we have had strong support for the events not only from Board members and Panel Chairs, but also from individual members of the Panels. It is so important that the Panel members are willing to say that, although they may not agree with everything in the final Plan, they had their say and they recognise that there was a fair process to balance all the differing priorities.

I have no doubt that we will face some tough questions. Part of the problem with taking a levy is that every sector of industry sees it as their money, to be used to solve their problems. It is often difficult to get someone in a particularly beleaguered section of the industry to recognise that their priorities don't get wider industry support. Of course, some of our occasional problems with levy payer support also come down to poor communication from Seafish. I have lost count of the number of times I have had levy payers telling me "What you ought to be doing is X" only for me to have to explain that we have actually done X for the past few years. I believe our record on communication has improved greatly over recent years, with, for example, our News Alerts on a variety of topics being widely read and well received, but we still have a way to go. Which is why the road show to present the new Corporate Plan is an important opportunity to have the Directors of Seafish available to answer questions.
